Birling Gap Beach is on the South Coast a few miles West of Eastbourne and about 2 miles from Beachy Head.
The beach itself consists of large stones, so decent foot wear is essential.
The rock faces are crumbling away, take note of the obvious rockfalls and stay away from underneath them.
The Captain visited in November 2024. It is very pebbly and a scramble to get to the area. To be honest, whilst the whiteness of the rocks is nice, there isn't much going for it apart from a bit of seclusion. It's not very comfortable to set up base and, unless the tide is in, is a long, slippery scramble to the water.
I visited late afternoon, around sunset and there was the odd couple and the odd dog walker but the naturist area was, unsurprisingly, empty.
Perhaps nicer in the summer but it is a bit of an effort to access. There is a National Trust shop, which I didn't venture into and plenty of parking. It did say Pay and Display, but I couldn't find a machine, nor patrol so took my chance.
Location
You need to be pretty mobile to get down and up the staircase and it is inaccessible to wheelchair users.
