This entry includes the beach Playa de Sotavento, also know as Playa de Sotavento de Jandia. In addition, it also surrounds Playa de la Barca so that is included here, too.

Playa de Sotavento is a long, long strip of sand from the south end of Playa Esmeralda to the North end of Playa el Salmo. It is almost 5km end to end and is continuous broad white sand and, to the Southern end some idyllic lagoons, trapping thousands of fish until the tide returns.

It is a very popular place for kite surfing, but the strip is so massive you will never feel overcrowded by anyone.

2025 September: The Captain visited here, walking South from Playa Esmeralda. As is usual here, make a note of the tide times. Whilst you will not get trapped, if you can time it so the tide is out, or heading out you will have several hours to walk the complete stretch of beach without having to divert off, round rocky outcrops. You will need footwear from time, to time just for a bit of rock scrambling. Give the kite surfers a wide berth and you have nobody anywhere near you. He stripped off at Costa Calma and was able to walk all the way to Sotavento, spend a couple of hours there, then walk all the way back to Costa Calma before having to dress again.

Not much else to say except that you should visit it, especially the lagoon area (which gets a bit busy near the built-up area). You won't regret it.

Location

Getting there
Walk South from Playa Esmerelda
Drive to Jandia and walk North
Accessibility notes
Miles of flat sand. Probably very accessible from Jandia. a bit of scrambling over rocks from the Esmerelda end.
Naturist information
Naturists and textiles co-exist quite happily. 80-90% textile, but don't let that put you off. So much space for everyone.
